Of late I’ve been listening to Oceans by Hillsong United
This song links with the story ‘Jesus walks on Water’
Matthew 14:22-33 (NLT)
22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning[b] Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”
27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here![c]”
28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong[d] wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.
There’s a couple of points I get from this story.
The first, Peter had faith and trust in God to walk out on the water. He stepped out into what was scary, intimidating and unknown… a storm! It was windy and the waves were coming from all directions, but he still decided to take a step of faith trusting that God was going to guide his steps. Are you taking a step of faith towards God’s will for your life? Are you trusting him as you walk on the uneven water? Or are the waves too intimidating and making you want to stay in the boat? Your God is for you and promises to be with you as you step out in faith.
If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
Isaiah 43: 2-3
When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up;
the flames will not consume you.
For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
The second point, when Peter walked amongst the waves and the wind, he lost sight of Jesus for a moment and focused on the high waves around him. Peter lost sight of the one who was keeping him above the waves, and that is the moment he started sinking. When we walk through tough situations, if our focus is on our circumstances and inadequacies and not on Jesus and his power, we too may despair and sink! But as soon as Jesus came back into Peter’s vision, Peter was lifted to the place of calm and security again. Are you keeping your eyes on Jesus? Are you keeping your gaze above the waves and circumstances of life?
We are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Focus your eyes on Jesus!
The story Jesus Walks on Water raises some tough questions for our lives. But in everything, remember that you are cherished and loved by God!
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Take some time out this week to listen to Oceans by Hillsong and read for yourself Jesus Walking on the Water (Matthew 14:22-33).
My prayer for you and myself is exactly what the bridge says..
Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Saviour.
